Puerto Escondido Yesteryear' and Today
![]() For many many years this picture of the "Skidbladner" hung on the walls of Frank Garbutt; his family often wondering where the picture was taken. Charles Hathaway, grandson of Frank Garbutt now in his 80’s shared the picture via B. J. and Steve Curran. When the HPYC club house is revamped the picture will hang there or in the HPYC history books. A family member was visiting the Sea of Cortez putting in at Danzante. Sitting relaxing taking in the peaceful surroundings and watching the dolphins at play the imposing Giganta Gorillas came into view. A light in the memory went off, taking a picture of the mountains. When arriving back home the mystery was solved when the two pictures were compared; the “Skidbladner” had been in Puerto Escondido. Frank A. Garbutt, an oil magnate and industrialist whose enthusiasm for sports was the founder of the today’s Los Angeles Athletic Club. He was involved in its daily affairs and finances, from 1890 to 1947 Perhaps the beautiful Puerto Escondido harbor, surrounding islands, and the majestic Giganta Mountain was Franks inspiration when he started the California Yacht Club in 1922.
